Interior Designers can make all the difference in your home improvement project

What our interior designers can do for you.

Our interior designers are passionate and eager to listen to all of your ideas. You will never feel rushed or forced into ideas or concepts of a pushy contractor or stubborn decorator. For an end-to-end experience, we can match you with an interior designer who will work with your architect and provide space planning ideas that match your personality and lifestyle. If your project does not require an architect, feel comfortable knowing our designer can provide you with thorough plans or blueprints, engineering stamps if requires, and will pull your permits for your project.

Michele Leach

Senior Interior Designer

Hailing from a multi-generational line of hands-on designers and builders, Michele is the third generation of Leaches reared and doing business in the Greater Long Beach area. Robert Leach (grandfather), ran a sporting goods store in Hawaiian Gardens for decades and was no stranger to building projects himself--his expertise in tooling and building culminated with his dream home in the rural setting of Kanosh, Utah, a 10,000 square foot Ranch Style home, still owned by the Leaches. It is no wonder that Bruce Leach (father), having himself worked for decades in the family store, ended up with a detailed knowledge of building and building codes; so much so that he took his degree in Urban Planning and worked as a master planner for the City of Santa Monica, where he authored a standard on codes still being used today.

Perhaps growing up with such a talented line of craftsmen and hands-on builders has helped to shape Michele's passion for design; however, do not think that she only knows the cosmetic side of design. From her early schooling at FIDM in Space Planning, where she worked on cutting-edge design campaigns for Mont Blanc, Marlboro, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger, Michele has since graduated into whole-house design and remodels in both the residential and commercial fields: she brings to bear 25 years of practical, hands-on drafting and designing, while knowing the ins and outs of rough construction and on through to the finished product. Her intimate knowledge of common industry mistakes in remodeling makes her well suited to be vigilant about executing your project details to exceed your expectations.

From making minute changes on counter heights for both the tall and petite, to ensuring your project is code compliant and ADA approved, Michele derives enjoyment in designing the optimal kitchen to feed your army of athletes and implementing state-of-the-art remote-controlled steam showers capable of being turned on from the driveway. Builder Boy is proud to welcome Michele Leach to our team, and it is our sincere desire, as well as hers, to make your remodel visions come true.

Beril Ural

Interior Design Assistant

Meet Beril Ural, our interior design assistant. She's currently attending classes at Orange Coast Community College and plans on transferring to Cal State Long Beach next year. She specializes in kitchen and bath remodels, and has several years of experience in cabinet refinishing.

Beril is excited to work on a variety of projects to get real-world experience that complements her in-class learning. She is currently under the supervision of senior designer Michele Leach, and works closely with her to produce drawings and estimates for our clients.

Beril draws her inspiration for design from her native Turkey and says the rich colors and bold patterns give her a unique perspective on interior remodeling. One of her main focuses in school is space planning, or the art of functional design, which she says is one of her favorite aspects of design because it transcends style and taste.

Interior Design vs Interior Decorating

What's the difference?

An interior designer is usually involved with a building project from the beginning, perhaps even working with the architect. Their job is to help create functional interior space by understanding how you will use each room and offer proper space planning, avoiding trends and choosing the right materials for your project where form will meet function. However, this means making a room more functional by considering light, sound and other design aspects. They are also well versed in building codes and structural considerations. Because of this interior designers, more than likely will have an abundance of experience and have had formal training and have obtained a license. With an interior designer on your project, you can expect an end-to-end experience which also includes many functions of an interior decorator.

On the other hand, an interior decorator isn't involved with the design of the building or the layout of the interior space. Their focus is entirely on the furniture, colors, textiles and textures of a room. Their job is to capture the personality and style of the residents and express it in their space. A decorator usually has a keen eye for trends but has very little training and does not require an education or a license to obtain the title. Because of this, an interior decorator is best used when a space has already been built and is a blank canvas.
